ABOUT EMILY

I grew up hiding novels behind music stands during band practice and on my lap in class.
I calculated how many books my allowance would buy down to the nickel. I missed my bus stops,
lost in my books until I finally looked up and noticed I was miles past my house.

So what?
We love words. That's why we're readers and writers.
But when you're ready for your book to meet the world, you need more than a book lover.
You need a grammar guru. A style virtuoso. A usage wizard.

That's me.

I earned my journalism degree from the University of Florida and moved to Oregon after graduation
to work for The Oregonian, where I spent a few years covering news and features in the
Portland metropolitan area. After that, I took a job with the largest independent bookstore
in the world, Powell's, where I worked for six years. I continued writing for newspapers and magazines,
as well as working as a freelance editor with the help of the world's
greatest (and hairiest) assistants, my horse and pit bull.

Now, I'm a full-time editor and consider myself very lucky to be doing what I love: performing word magic.
I have a natural eye for what works and what doesn’t in a piece of writing, and my most valuable skill as an editor
is the ability to read any paragraph and perfect it. I shape sentences and make them flow so readers
aren’t distracted by awkward sentences ― and all that comes through are the ideas of the writer.
I've worked on novels, novellas, and works of non-fiction for indie and hybrid authors, as well as small-press publishers. I'm a quick and meticulous proofreader and copy editor, and I provide insightful developmental feedback to authors who feel they need help with style, voice, pacing, characterization, and plot development.
I specialize in romance, mystery/thriller, horror, children's fiction, and contemporary literature.

Editing is my favorite sport, and I'm damn good at it. I hope we work together soon!
